Start Now: Basic Budget List

This basic budgeting list is to get your financial gears churning and hopefully set you on your path to financial clarity.

What to consider to get your finances in order is simple and things you already know. The point of writing it all down is to provide a sense of clarity that may not be as obvious during difficult times.

As you get ready to have legal discussions on child support this easy and ongoing task will help you make better decisions for you and your child.

My personal belief is that the financial aspect of the divorce is the biggest point of contention masked under the guise of shared, joint or physical custody. The goal of setting up a budget and being prepared for the legal discussions is to make your child's and your need as real as possible. The numbers don't lie.

Taking the time to list and detail your financial position can save time and attorney fees.

Here's a list to get you started and how it can be applied during child support discussions.

How does this help you during Child Support discussions?

Before submitting my paperwork to calculate the monthly amount, I had a general tally in my head. It was a revelation how much more money I was spending on child related issues in comparison to the Ex. For one of the costs, I honestly needed a day to process.

Taking the time to create a budget for yourself helps you have more control over your day to day, it helps you to make healthier decisions moving forward and you're setting a much needed example to your children.

Maintaining your composure and staying focused can be the most challenging part of the process. Every inch of who you are feels raw. The slightest rub can easily send you into a spiral. This is just one tool you can use to keep you centered.

Give yourself the fortitude to build and maintain healthy money habits post divorce.
